8200 Planetary Mill

Reduces hard and brittle samples with ease

Cole Parmer’s Planetary Mill 8200 (formerly: SPEX) grinds samples with a mechanical motion in which the grinding cup is rotated in one direction, while the platform, the planetary wheel (often called the sun wheel), is rotated in the opposite direction.

Functionally, it is also described as a high-abrasion or high-energy ball mill, used for pulverising stones, minerals, sand, cement, slag, ceramics, glass and other brittle to hard samples to analytical fineness, mixing powders or making emulsions.

The mills also feature a touch screen display, a sleek modern design, forced air cooling, a safety lock and a choice of grinding cups and media made of hardened steel or stainless steel, purchased separately.

Mechanical grinding is done at a ratio of 2:1, so the jar rotates twice for each rotation of the sun wheel. As the jar is moved, relative centrifugal force is transferred to the grinding balls, causing them to move against each other and against the jar wall in a circular motion, grinding the sample.

  • A planetary wheel, also called a sun wheel, rotates in one direction while the grinding jar rotates in the opposite direction. This creates large centrifugal forces.
  • One grinding station for one 250 mL or one 500 mL grinding jar
  • Unique, easy-to-operate jar clamping system
  • Programmable touch screen interface that can store up to 10 protocols
  • Ergonomic design makes loading a grinding jar into the mill easy
